Passport photo size checklist (before you apply)

Passport photo rules are published by governments, not by Tokitool. What we can offer (and what this checklist is for) is a practical order of operations that matches how our Passport Photo Resizer is built: pick a size, align the head with on-canvas guides, choose a background, export JPEG (or PNG only when a portal explicitly allows it).

Country hubs under /passport-photo summarize common sizes so you can start faster. Treat them as a starting point. Before you pay fees, open the authority that will receive the application and confirm the current wording.

Checklist Tokitool users should run

A. Size is a physical size, not “looks square”

Presets in the resizer set width/height in mm or inches plus DPI so the download matches print expectations. If a portal asks for pixels instead, enter those fields directly; do not assume a social-media crop is close enough. US 2×2 in and Schengen 35×45 mm are different rectangles; using the wrong preset is a common self-inflicted rejection.

B. Background before you obsess over kilobytes

Busy wallpaper fails review even when the file is tiny. The resizer can place the subject on white / cream-style fills after you have a clean cutout. If the original scene is messy, run Background Remover first (on-device model), then finish sizing here.

C. Head guides are not decoration

The overlay exists because many rules care about chin-to-crown proportion inside the frame. Nudge the crop until the guides make sense for your face; do not export a full-body vacation photo squeezed into 35×45 mm.

D. JPEG is the default download for a reason

Most portals want JPEG. Tokitool keeps JPEG primary and offers PNG as a secondary path with an on-page warning. Use PNG only when the application text says it accepts PNG.

E. Compress only after geometry is right

If upload fails on file size, open the Image Compressor or read our compression notes. Crushing quality before the crop is correct wastes time; you will re-export anyway.

What we will not claim

We do not claim Tokitool photos are “guaranteed accepted.” Lighting, expression, glasses glare, and recency rules are human judgment calls outside a resize tool. That honesty is intentional: overselling acceptance would be misleading under publisher expectations for accurate site content.
